Some are fixed in position and these can be quite simple in their design or they can culminate into an intricate percolator. Down stems that can be removed are quite useful for those that strive to keep their glass clean. I always recommend a slitted down stem at a minimum as a simple straight tube offers minimal\/no diffusion.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese down stems are made entirely from borosilicate glass with 6 slits total along the base. These slits will offer a basic form of diffusion, helping to break up smoke for filtration to occur. One large bubble of smoke transforms into a multitude. Once in position within your bong, the base of the stem should land near the middle of the chamber closer to the base. Just ensure that smoke will pass through and will shoot out directly into water.
